Rabies Outbreak Claims Lives in Adamawa, Urgent Vaccination Campaign Initiated

Rabies outbreak in Adamawa, Nigeria, has claimed six lives, with two deaths in Gombi Local Government Area and four in Yola North and South LGAs. Health stakeholders are seeking intensified intervention to curb the zoonotic disease.

The state Director of Veterinary Service Epidemiology, Nyalas Barthh, confirmed the fatalities and emphasized the importance of timely vaccination for dogs and cats to prevent rabies. The National Veterinary Research Institute in Plateau State provided confirmation of rabies in laboratory samples.

The Adamawa State Government, along with donor agencies and NGOs, is urged to provide immediate support. A free mass vaccination campaign for dogs has been initiated in response to the crisis.
