Ministry Launches Nationwide Campaign to End Rabies in Nigeria by 2030

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development aims to eradicate rabies in Nigeria by 2030 through intensified efforts, including a nationwide mass dog vaccination campaign. The Director of Veterinary Public Health Epidemiology, Samuel Anzaku, highlighted the growing public health concern of rabies, emphasizing the vulnerability of children and women in rural areas.

The campaign's success relies on strong collaboration between federal, state, and local governments, as well as support from the private sector and international partners like the FAO. Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha is set to kick off the mass vaccination program in Abuja, targeting eight priority states initially before expanding nationwide.

The initiative aims to provide 90% protection against rabies outbreaks and ultimately achieve zero human deaths from the disease.
