Nigerian Tomato Farmers Reassure Stable Prices During Ramadan Amid Bumper Harvest

The Tomato Grower Processor Market Association Nigeria, represented by its Kaduna State Chairman, Mr. Rabiu Zuntu, has allayed fears of a price hike for tomatoes during the upcoming Ramadan fast.

Zuntu explained that unlike previous years, this year's bumper harvest will lead to stable prices as the fasting period coincides with the peak tomato harvest in northern states like Kaduna and Kano. The reduced consumption during Ramadan, with Muslims skipping breakfast and lunch, is expected to lower demand and subsequently prices.

Currently, a 50kg basket of tomatoes in the northern market sells for between N7,000 to N10,000, with recent prices dropping due to logistical issues. The association has called for government intervention to support vegetable farmers and ensure a successful planting season.
