Nigerian Marketers Predict Tomato Price Drop During 2026 Ramadan Fast

The Grower Processor Market Association of Nigeria has predicted a decrease in tomato prices during the 2026 Ramadan fast in Nigeria. Mr.

Rabiu Zuntu, the Chairman of the association in Kaduna State, mentioned in an interview that unlike previous years, tomato and pepper prices are expected to drop during the fasting period due to a coinciding peak harvest season in the northern states. Zuntu highlighted that vegetable prices may even decrease further during the fast due to increased cultivation and supply.

Farmers in the north have reportedly shifted to vegetable cultivation following a drop in grain prices, resulting in improved yields despite challenges like the Tuta absoluta virus. The current price of a 50kg basket of tomatoes ranges from 7,000 to 10,000 naira in the northern part of the country.

The association has appealed to the federal government to support vegetable farmers ahead of the 2026 planting season.
