NARD Issues Strike Ultimatum to Federal Government

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), led by President Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, has announced an ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening a nationwide strike on August 10.

This decision follows persistent assaults on healthcare workers, unpaid salary and allowance arrears, and deteriorating welfare conditions. Dr.

Suleiman stated that the National Executive Council (NEC) had engaged with the government for months without resolution, leading to this ultimatum. Since suspending a previous strike on November 29, 2022, NARD has repeatedly extended deadlines for the government to address their grievances.

Key issues include the Professional Allowance Table, which was supposed to be corrected since 2019 but remains unresolved. Dr.

Suleiman reported that approximately 30 resident doctors have been assaulted in hospitals over the past year, with only a few cases leading to arrests. He attributed these attacks to systemic failures in healthcare facilities, including inadequate infrastructure and erratic power supply.
