Nigerian Correctional Service Launches Agricultural Initiative

The Nigerian Correctional Service, under the leadership of Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is set to redefine its mandate by launching a new agricultural initiative aimed at enhancing food security and rehabilitating inmates.

This initiative will commence in the 2026 farm season, with the goal of utilizing vast land resources within correctional facilities to produce agricultural products. The program will flag off on April 24, 2026, at the Gwagwalada farm center in Abuja.

The service currently operates 20 strategically located farm centers across Nigeria, covering 12,263 hectares of arable land. The initiative aims to integrate crop cultivation, livestock farming, and agro-based ventures, providing inmates with practical skills that will enhance their employability and self-reliance upon release.

This approach is expected to stabilize food supply, reduce market price pressures, and contribute significantly to Nigeria's agricultural output and economic growth.
