Nigeria Partners to Combat Violent Extremism in Prisons

The Federal Government of Nigeria is collaborating with the Global Centre for Cooperative Security (GCC) to combat violent extremism within correctional facilities. This partnership, highlighted during a workshop in Abuja, aims to enhance the resilience of custodial environments by implementing reforms and rehabilitation programs for inmates.

Major General Adamu Laka of the National Counter Terrorism Centre emphasized the importance of international cooperation to address the challenges of violent extremism, which require collective solutions. The initiative includes training for correctional staff to effectively manage and rehabilitate individuals linked to terrorism.

Saeida Rouass, a senior fellow at GCC, noted the need for practical guidance and technical assistance to support these efforts. The program builds on previous experiences in countries like Morocco, Kenya, and Indonesia, focusing on creating a safe environment that prevents radicalization and promotes reintegration of detainees into society.
