Sultan of Sokoto Urges Tinubu on El-Rufai's Detention

In a public sermon, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, challenged President Bola Tinubu regarding the detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. He urged Tinubu to either release El-Rufai or ensure he is properly charged in court, highlighting the importance of adhering to legal procedures and due process, especially in cases involving high-profile political figures.

The Sultan's remarks were supported by Islamic scholar Sanusi Khalil, who noted the difficulty ordinary citizens face in raising such concerns. Additionally, the Sultan expressed worries about security developments in Northern Nigeria, questioning the presence of American troops in the region and seeking clarity on their mission.

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) defended El-Rufai's continued detention, stating it was based on a court order and that their actions complied with the law. El-Rufai's legal team had filed an application on March 6 to set aside a remand order granted on March 5, which allowed for an extended detention period for further investigation.
