Omokri and Nominees Face Hurdles in Diplomatic Appointments

Reno Omokri, nominated as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, and Olumilua Oluwayimika Ayotunwa, nominated to Japan, are facing hurdles in their diplomatic appointments as they await necessary approvals from their respective host countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that 65 out of 69 ambassadorial nominees approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have secured the required diplomatic clearance.

Grace Bent declined her nomination to Togo before any diplomatic papers were sent, while Mohammed Mahmud Lele, designated ambassador to Algeria, died on April 19 in Ankara, Turkey, before he could assume his role. The ministry, represented by spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, assured that discussions with Mexico and Japan are ongoing, and both countries have indicated that the approval process is progressing.

The ministry emphasized that the successful clearance of the 65 nominees marks a significant step in restoring Nigeria’s diplomatic presence, with many ambassadors already assuming their duties or preparing to present their Letters of Credence.
