Wildfire Near Reno Forces 42,000 to Evacuate, Emergency Declared

A wildfire on the outskirts of Reno, Nevada, has forced the evacuation of around 42,000 residents, with an additional 45,000 placed on standby. The fire was first reported at 11:15 local time on Saturday and has been confirmed as human-caused.

By August 23, it had scorched approximately 10,500 acres and remained completely uncontained. Six individuals have sustained injuries, including three emergency responders engaged in firefighting efforts.

Unpredictable wind conditions have complicated control efforts and contributed to the fire's rapid spread. In response, the Nevada Governor declared a state of emergency for Washoe County and activated the National Guard to assist firefighting crews and law enforcement.

Approximately 13,700 homes are within the evacuation zone, and local emergency services have established two shelters for displaced residents. All Washoe County schools will remain closed on Monday, except for one, and widespread road closures are in effect to facilitate emergency vehicle movement.
