Nigeria Launches New Plan for Ex-Terrorist Reintegration

The Nigerian government has unveiled a new operational framework aimed at reintegrating former terrorists involved in armed violence across the country. This initiative, part of Nigeria's broader strategy to tackle insecurity through non-military measures, is known as the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) program.

Major General Adamu Laka, speaking at a workshop in Abuja, emphasized the need for a detailed operational structure beyond existing policies to ensure effective implementation of the DDR program. The framework was developed after extensive consultations with stakeholders and aims to strengthen accountability and collaboration among relevant agencies.

The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) stressed the importance of respecting human rights and adhering to the rule of law during implementation. Ambassador Abimbola Wo Osik noted that while rehabilitation programs exist, a standardized approach is necessary for nationwide effectiveness.

Mario Nascimento from the United Nations commended Nigeria's adaptive reintegration strategy, highlighting the importance of local community involvement in achieving long-term peace.
