Nigerian Military Accidental Bombings Claim Over 400 Lives

A report indicates that over 400 civilians have lost their lives due to accidental bombings by the Nigerian military since 2017, igniting renewed debates on operational accuracy and intelligence gathering in conflict zones across northern Nigeria. Notable incidents include a January 17, 2017 airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force that mistakenly bombed an internally displaced persons camp in Rann, Borno State, killing at least 115 people, including humanitarian workers.

Subsequent attacks, such as a December 18, 2022 strike in Mutumji village, Zamfara State, reportedly killed 64 civilians, while a January 24, 2023 strike in Nasarawa State claimed around 50 herders. The military insists these operations were based on intelligence suggesting terrorist presence.

Recent strikes, including a December 2023 drone attack in Kaduna State that killed 100 civilians, have raised serious concerns about targeting errors. Despite military assurances of investigations into civilian harm, clerics and state officials have called for better intelligence and accountability to prevent further civilian casualties.
