Nigerian House Committee Aims to Clear Backlog of Federal Audit Reports

The Public Accounts Committee of the Nigerian House of Representatives, led by Chairman Bamidele Salam, has committed to clearing the backlog of federal audit reports by ensuring the submission of reports for 2023, 2024, and 2025. The committee expressed concerns over delays in the audit process, which hinder its constitutional oversight responsibilities, particularly in scrutinizing public expenditures.

Despite progress in obtaining recent audit reports, gaps remain, with reports up to 2022 still pending. A retreat was held to strategize on addressing these challenges, with a focus on setting clear priorities and objectives for the legislative year 2026.

The committee emphasized the importance of effective stakeholder engagement and capacity building to strengthen oversight functions. Dr. Samuel Ibrahim conducted training sessions to enhance technical and interpersonal skills of committee members and staff.

The committee's efforts aim to promote fiscal discipline, ensure proper accountability of public funds, and improve transparency in governance.
