Nigerian House of Representatives Considers Banning Public Parade of Suspects

The Nigerian House of Representatives is contemplating amending the constitution to prohibit the public display of suspects by law enforcement agencies, a practice criticized for violating human rights. The proposed amendment seeks to explicitly outlaw the public parade of arrested individuals, aiming to protect their dignity and prevent psychological trauma.

This move comes after years of advocacy against the practice, highlighting concerns of abuse of power by law enforcement. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker and Chair of the committee reviewing the constitution, is expected to lead the debate on the issue when the National Assembly reconvenes.
