Reps Order Reinstatement of Dismissed UNICAL Workers

The House of Representatives has mandated the immediate reinstatement and payment of dismissed non-academic employees of the University of Calabar, who were excluded from the payroll during the 2019-2020 recruitment exercise. This decision follows a petition led by Bitru Kwamoti, a member representing Michika/Madagali in Adamawa State, which highlighted the financial difficulties faced by the affected workers.

The House Committee on Public Petitions, chaired by Kwamoti, investigated the matter and found that the university's management, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Florence Obi, had not included these employees in the payroll despite their compliance with recruitment requirements.

The committee's report, adopted by the House, recommended that the university management regularize the appointments of the affected staff and ensure their names are integrated into the federal government's central payroll system. This intervention is expected to provide relief to the employees who have struggled for years without recognition or payment.
