Reps Investigate N2bn Allegations Against Mining Marshals

The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into allegations of financial impropriety within the Mining Marshals, particularly concerning over N2 billion reportedly found in the bank account of a State Commander. This resolution was prompted by a motion sponsored by Hon.

Abdulmaleek Danga, who highlighted the establishment of the Mining Marshals Corps on March 21, 2024, by the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Federal Ministry of Interior. The Corps, comprising over 2,200 personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), was created to secure mining sites and combat illegal mining.

However, concerns have arisen regarding the unit's operational effectiveness and allegations of wrongful actions against legitimate mineral title holders. The House is particularly disturbed by the lack of transparency in financial dealings and the redeployment of the Commander instead of facing judicial inquiry or disciplinary action.

Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu has tasked the Committee on Solid Minerals Development with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the Mining Marshals' operations.
