House Investigates Illegal Mineral Exploitation in Nigeria

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has commenced an investigation into the illegal exploitation of minerals across the country. This initiative was announced during a workshop involving high-level stakeholders in Abuja, where Mr.

Tajudeen Abba, a speaker from the House of Representatives, emphasized the need for action against unpatriotic elements exploiting Nigeria's mineral resources. The ad hoc committee, chaired by Sanni Abdulraheem, is tasked with examining whether existing laws and regulatory institutions are equipped to close gaps that allow illegal mining to thrive.

The committee will also trace financial trails to identify and process illegal activities and assess the adequacy of security measures around mining communities. The National Security and Civil Defence Corps reported the arrest of 671 illegal mining suspects, with 397 already charged in court.

The workshop highlighted challenges such as inadequate logistics, manpower, and judicial delays, calling for increased funding and better surveillance to combat illegal mining effectively.
