Reps Investigate Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians in SA

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives announced plans to investigate the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. This resolution followed a motion sponsored by Hon. Babajimi Benson, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence.

He emphasized the need for parliamentary intervention, recalling Nigeria's significant contributions to South Africa's liberation from apartheid. Despite this historical relationship, Nigerians in South Africa have faced recurrent xenophobic violence for nearly two decades, including killings, mob attacks, and property destruction.

The House noted that significant outbreaks of violence occurred in 2008, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021, leading to diplomatic tensions and emergency evacuations of Nigerian citizens. Recent anti-foreigner campaigns have heightened fears among Nigerians, prompting many to abandon their homes and businesses.

The House expressed concern over the lack of comprehensive documentation of the losses suffered by Nigerians, which hampers effective policy formulation and legislative inquiry.
