Nigerian Senate Condemns Xenophobic Attacks on Citizens

The Nigerian Senate condemned the recent xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa during a plenary session on Tuesday. Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong moved a motion highlighting the serious threat to the safety and livelihood of Nigerians living in South Africa.

The Senate urged the Federal Government to seek firm guarantees from South African authorities to protect Nigerian citizens. Senator Salihu Mustapha emphasized the need for Nigeria to respond strongly, stating that the country cannot remain silent while its citizens are attacked.

He suggested reviewing diplomatic relations with South Africa. However, former Senate leader Yahaya Abdullahi advised caution against immediate drastic actions, linking the attacks to efforts to destabilize the South African government.

The Senate directed the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to obtain written assurances from South Africa regarding the safety of Nigerians and to pursue the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attacks. Additionally, the Senate called for the establishment of an early warning system to prevent future xenophobic attacks.
