House of Reps to Pass State Police Bill Soon

The House of Representatives is preparing to pass a State Police bill, which will be reviewed during a plenary session on Tuesday. The bill, aimed at establishing state police services, is being considered by a special ad hoc committee chaired by Hon.

Benjamin Kalu. The committee met on Monday to discuss the Senate's version of the state police legislative framework and to recommend further legislative actions.

Key amendments adopted by the Senate include provisions that subordinate state police services to federal police services, while allowing state police services to regulate their own procedures without gubernatorial approval. The bill will also ensure that federal intervention in state police services is subject to judicial review.

Hon. Kalu expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would assent to the bill promptly once the constitutional amendment process is concluded.

The House had previously withdrawn an earlier constitutional amendment bill on June 11, 2026, to enable consideration of the executive bill related to police reform.
