House of Reps to Consider State Police Establishment

The House of Representatives is scheduled to take significant steps towards the establishment of State Police Services in Nigeria during a plenary session on Thursday. Lawmakers will consider the Constitution Review Committee’s report, which proposes an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to allow for the creation of State Police Services.

This report was formally presented by Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Special Ad-hoc Committee on Constitution Review, during Wednesday’s plenary.

In preparation for the upcoming debate, Hon. Kalu convened an emergency meeting with members of the Constitution Review Committee to refine their position.

This proposed legislation, initiated by the Presidency, is one of the most significant constitutional amendment bills before the 10th session of the National Assembly, aiming to decentralize policing alongside the existing federal structure. The committee had previously harmonized its position with the Senate’s version of the proposed legislative framework after extensive deliberations.
