Reps Urge FG to Tackle Rising Aviation Fuel Costs

The House of Representatives called on the Federal Government to urgently address the rising costs of aviation fuel, which significantly impact domestic airlines in Nigeria. During a plenary session on Tuesday, the motion was adopted, with Paschal Agbodike representing Ihiala Federal Constituency in Anambra State emphasizing that aviation turbine kerosene constitutes 40-60% of total operational expenses for airlines.

The resolution noted that many airlines are struggling to maintain quality service and have begun scaling back operations due to the high costs of jet fuel, which have been exacerbated by foreign exchange issues and the volatility of global crude oil prices. The House expressed concern that without intervention, major domestic airlines could collapse, leading to severe economic consequences.

The motion received unanimous support, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu urged the Federal Government and relevant ministries to stabilize fuel prices and prioritize foreign exchange allocations for airlines. The House mandated its committee on aviation to investigate the persistent price increases within two weeks.
