Reps to Scrutinize ₦98bn Water Ministry Budget for 2026

The House of Representatives has committed to closely scrutinizing the ₦98 billion budget proposed by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources for the year 2026. During a budget defense session, Minister Joseph Utsev presented the budget, which aims to complete ongoing dam irrigation projects across Nigeria and enhance food security through expanded irrigation.

Deputy Chairman Mukhtar Chawai emphasized the need for accountability and value for money, pledging to conduct nationwide inspections of dam and irrigation schemes. The ministry's priorities include flood control and drought mitigation in response to climate variability.

Utsev also highlighted the progress of water sanitation and hygiene programs, which aim to eliminate open defecation across 17 states. The committee expressed concerns regarding the pace of implementing the 2025 budget, particularly for capital projects, and assured that oversight visits to assess compliance and progress would be undertaken.

The ministry aims to strengthen reservoir management and improve agricultural productivity through various initiatives.
