NRS Debunks Viral Claims of New Vehicle Tax in Nigeria

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has officially debunked a viral infographic claiming that the federal government plans to introduce a new green tax surcharge on high engine capacity vehicles, set to take effect on July 1, 2026. The infographic suggested a tax rate of 2% for vehicles with engine sizes between 2,000cc and 3,999cc, and 4% for those above 4,000cc, while exempting vehicles below 2,000cc, mass transit buses, electric vehicles, and locally manufactured vehicles.

NRS spokesperson Dare Adekanmbi emphasized that the claims are false and misleading, urging the public to rely on verified information from official government channels. The NRS clarified that the viral message, which appeared to be authentic due to the use of the federal government logo, did not originate from their agency.

Citizens were advised to disregard the fabricated message and follow official communications for accurate information regarding government policies.
