Hashim Urges Labour to Protect Democracy in Nigeria

During a visit to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Dr. Gbenga Hashim, a former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), called on the Nigerian Labour Movement to take a central role in protecting the country's democracy.

He expressed concern over Nigeria's gradual slide toward authoritarianism and highlighted the historical significance of the labour movement in sustaining democratic governance. Hashim emphasized that the sacrifices and contributions of the working class are integral to Nigeria's growth and that the current democratic dispensation should benefit all citizens, particularly workers.

He warned that neglecting the welfare of workers could jeopardize democracy, urging political leaders to refocus government policies to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians. Hashim commended the current leadership of the NLC, particularly Joe Ajaero, for their steadfastness and courage in defending workers' rights despite facing significant pressure and intimidation.
