Hashim and Falana Unite Against One-Party System in Nigeria

On Wednesday, Dr. Gbenga Hashim, a former presidential candidate, and senior advocate Femi Falana convened to express their commitment to resisting the establishment of a one-party system in Nigeria.

They released a statement asserting that pro-democracy groups across Nigeria would oppose any moves towards a singular party system. Hashim emphasized the importance of maintaining Nigeria's multi-party democratic framework and the need for ongoing consultations with key stakeholders to sustain this structure.

Falana, who has a long-standing association with Hashim, noted their joint efforts in various pro-democracy initiatives over the past four decades, including their involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle and significant protests in 1988. Hashim also recalled their legal resistance against military rule, including a 1988 lawsuit challenging the regime of Ibrahim Babangida, where Falana served as pro bono counsel.

They reiterated their commitment to defending democratic principles and civil liberties in Nigeria.
