Bayelsa Families Struggle with Rising Food Costs

In Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, rising food prices are significantly impacting household budgets, forcing families to skip meals and reduce spending on non-essential items. Mrs Deborah Tuleh, a civil servant, shared that her family sometimes skips lunch or breakfast to manage food portions.
She noted that even small increases in food prices, such as an item rising by N100 to N500, complicate budgeting. Families are replacing meat with eggs or crayfish due to affordability issues.
Retailer Florence Doni reported that the price of rice has increased from N5,500 to N6,000, and cooking oil from N1,500 to N2,000. Happiness Macaulay, who sells bole, fish, and beans, mentioned that the cost of fish has risen from N80,000 to N95,000 per carton, while charcoal prices have surged from N8,000 to between N17,000 and N18,000.
These price hikes are attributed to increased fuel costs affecting transportation and overall food prices, leading customers to buy less or seek cheaper alternatives.
