Rivers State By-Election: Voting Underway Amid Rain

Voting commenced in the Rivers State by-election on February 11, 2023, across seven local government areas, including Khana, Gokana, Tai, Elem, Andoni, Opobo Nkoro, and Oyigbo. This election is being held to fill the vacancy created by the death of former Senator Barri Mpigi.

Reports indicate a large turnout of voters, particularly in Ward 4 of Gokana LGA, which comprises 21 polling units. However, heavy rainfall on the morning of the election delayed the distribution of electoral materials, affecting the commencement of accreditation.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Senator Magnus Abe, cast his vote in Ward 16 of his hometown, Bera, Gokana LGA. He expressed confidence in the peaceful conduct of the election.

Despite the weather conditions, there was enthusiasm among voters, and challenges with the bimodal voter accreditation system were noted. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was commended for its preparations, and there were calls for residents to participate actively in the electoral process.
