Rivers State Reopens School After Toddler's Death

Rivers State has announced the reopening of Wisdom Gate International School, located in Obio Akpor Local Government Area, four months after the tragic death of two-year-old pupil Wynn Akeku on March 17, when a bookshelf collapsed on her while she was asleep in the classroom. The Rivers State Ministry of Education, led by Dr.

Peter Nwagor, confirmed that the school met the required safety standards after a thorough investigation. The reopening decision has sparked concerns among stakeholders in the education sector, particularly parents advocating for safety standards in schools across the state.

Dr. Isuaka Akeku, the father of the deceased toddler, expressed disappointment over the government's decision to permit the school to reopen while the case remains pending in court, and his daughter has yet to be buried.

He questioned the timing of the reopening and the status of the independent investigation. The case against the school's proprietor and four management staff members is ongoing in the Rivers State High Court.
