Russia Denies Recruiting Nigerians for Ukraine War, Emphasizes Growing Relationship with Nigeria

Russia's ambassador to Nigeria, Andrei Podyelyshev, addressed claims of Nigerian recruitment for the Ukraine war, stating that there is no official program backed by the Russian government for Nigerian involvement in the conflict. He emphasized that any recruitment activities linking Nigerians to Russia are not recognized by the Russian state and warned that such actions would be treated as illegal.

Podyelyshev highlighted the ongoing military cooperation between Nigeria and Russia, including training programs and the possible supply of Russian equipment. He also mentioned plans to establish a nuclear science and technology center in Nigeria, along with scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students in Russian universities.

The ambassador reiterated Russia's support for a global balance of power and emphasized the importance of African nations resolving their challenges without external interference. He described Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa and highlighted the mutual respect for sovereignty and cultural diversity.

The discussions aimed to strengthen the long-term partnership covering security, trade, and diplomacy.
