Five Nigerians Killed in Russia-Ukraine War: Report

A new investigative report has revealed that five Nigerians were killed in the Russia-Ukraine War, highlighting the vulnerability of African youth being drawn into the conflict under false pretenses. The report, titled "Busi Despair," published in February 2026 by an investigative group, details how young men are lured abroad with promises of jobs and education, only to be compelled to sign military contracts.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there has been an increasing recruitment of African nationals, with a database indicating 1,417 African recruits compiled from Ukrainian sources between mid-2023 and 2025. Among the identified foreign fighters, Nigerians have been deployed in high-risk combat roles, often described as "cannon fodder." The deceased include Abdoulay Issaka (27), Ismael Agbo (43), Mose Omal (25), Adamu Abdulai Ismail (47), and Taiwo Omoniyi (50).

The report estimates at least 316 African recruits have died in the war, with the actual number likely higher. Recruitment efforts target economically disadvantaged individuals through social media platforms, promising lucrative salaries and benefits that are often not honored.
