Nigeria Warns Citizens Against Foreign War Recruitment

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed alarm regarding the increasing trend of Nigerian citizens being recruited into foreign wars, particularly in Ukraine. Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, issued a statement on Sunday through spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, advising citizens to avoid offers that involve enlistment in overseas conflicts.

Recent media investigations and security reports indicate that Nigerians are being recruited under false pretenses, including promises of lucrative employment, security jobs, educational opportunities, and migration incentives. The Ministry noted that victims are often coerced into signing contracts in foreign languages without proper legal guidance, making it difficult to understand their obligations.

Reports also indicate that travel documents are frequently confiscated upon arrival, leaving individuals stranded. Tuggar warned that participating in foreign armed conflicts outside official government arrangements could endanger lives and violate Nigerian law against mercenary activities.

The government is intensifying investigations into recruitment networks and plans to launch public awareness campaigns to curb these practices.
