Amaechi Claims Buhari Avoided Electoral Bill Over Russia

Rotimi Amaechi, a former Minister of Transport, revealed that former President Muhammadu Buhari declined to sign an electoral reform bill due to concerns that Russia would manipulate Nigeria's voting system to install a preferred leader. Amaechi made this statement during a political meeting on Thursday, where he addressed members of the opposition.

He attributed Nigeria's political troubles to a weak opposition and poor civic resistance, rather than a failure of citizens to act against bad governance. Amaechi noted that Buhari had previously shown interest in electoral reform but was ultimately persuaded by certain ministers not to approve the bill, fearing it would lead to foreign interference.

He criticized political leaders for testing public reactions and failing to resist corruption, highlighting the disconnect between leaders and citizens. Amaechi concluded by suggesting that the current administration under Bola Tinubu would soon begin to demand electoral reform, despite not actively supporting it.
