Russia Exploits African Youth for Military Recruitment

Russia's military is facing significant personnel shortages in its ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with losses reportedly exceeding 1 million soldiers since the invasion began in February 2022. In response, Russia has turned to Africa, exploiting economic hardships to recruit young people through deceptive schemes.

These include offers of scholarships and military service disguised as educational opportunities at institutions like Novosibirsk State University. Recruitment efforts are heavily promoted on social media platforms, promising salaries of $2,500 per month and bonuses of $37,000.

However, the Kenyan government has reacted by banning Russian enlistment and closing 600 travel agencies linked to these recruitment activities. Kenyan Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi announced that Kenyans will no longer be able to join the Russian armed forces, following discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The Kenyan Intelligence Service estimates that around 1,000 citizens were recruited by March 2023.
