Russia's Deceptive Recruitment Targets African Nationals

The Kremlin is ramping up its overseas recruitment of foreign nationals, especially from African countries, to bolster its military forces amid high casualties in the ongoing war against Ukraine. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russian military casualties have reached approximately 1,442,140 personnel, with daily losses averaging 1,500 to 1,600 troops during the summer of 2026.

Ghana's Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, revealed that around 272 Ghanaians have been recruited since 2022, with 55 reported dead and two currently prisoners of war. Ablakwa stated that these individuals were lured by false promises of employment in sectors like construction and hospitality, only to be forced into military training and combat roles.

This pattern of deceptive recruitment has been observed in several African nations, including Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Bolivia, and Panama, where civilians are misled into joining the Russian Armed Forces.
