Nigeria Ratifies African Medicine Agency Treaty for Health

Nigeria has ratified the African Medicine Agency (AMA) treaty, a historic move aimed at enhancing pharmaceutical self-sufficiency and eliminating counterfeit drugs within its borders. The Federal Executive Council, led by Minister of Health Prof.

Ali Pate, approved this action in February 2025. This ratification represents a strategic effort by the Nigerian government to protect its citizens from substandard and falsified medical products.

Joining the AMA will allow Nigeria to ensure that every tablet and vaccine entering the country meets the highest global standards. The initiative aligns with the broader goals of the African Union to create a single pharmaceutical market, which is expected to reduce administrative bottlenecks and expedite the arrival of essential treatments.

The AMA will facilitate faster drug approvals across multiple borders, leading to increased efficiency and lower product costs, ultimately translating to lower prices for local pharmacies. The agency will also coordinate the surveillance of medicines and share data on adverse reactions, enhancing regional cooperation in detecting and removing dangerous batches from the Nigerian market.
