Themba Zwane Receives Three-Match Suspension from FIFA

Themba Zwane, a midfielder for South Africa's national football team, has been handed a three-match suspension by FIFA after receiving a red card in the 84th minute of a World Cup match against Mexico, which South Africa lost 2-0. The incident, which involved a challenge on Mexico's Roberto Alvarado, was reviewed by VAR and deemed a serious foul play, leading to the suspension under Article 14, paragraph 1 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

The decision is subject to appeal. This suspension means that Zwane will miss South Africa's remaining group fixtures against the Czech Republic and South Korea, as well as a potential Round of 32 clash if the team progresses.

The match against Mexico was particularly chaotic, with South Africa reduced to nine men after Siphephelo Sithole was also sent off. Head coach Hugo Broos accepted the red card decision but expressed less confidence regarding Zwane's dismissal, stating that he did not believe it was a soft red card.
