Macky Sall Seeks Senegal's Support for UN Bid

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall met with current President Bassir Diomay Fay in Dakar to seek support for his candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. This visit marks Sall's first to the country since leaving office in April 2024.

During the meeting, Sall pledged to keep President Fay informed throughout the selection process. Sall, who served as Senegal's president from 2012 to 2024, is currently nominated for the position by Burundi, which holds the rotating presidency of the African Union.

His arrival at the military airport in Dakar was met with a crowd of supporters. However, the visit also attracted criticism from civil society groups, who accused Sall's administration of political repression, which allegedly resulted in dozens of deaths during his final year in office.

The visit has renewed calls for accountability regarding the death record during Sall's tenure, particularly following the dismissal of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and protests against Sall's visit.
