Senegal Endorses Macky Sall for UN Secretary-General

Senegal's current government, led by Foreign Minister Bassir Diomay Fay, has officially endorsed former President Macky Sall's candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. This endorsement comes despite earlier political disagreements and accusations of the Sall administration's repression and concealment of economic data during its final year in office.

The decision to support Sall's candidacy was announced following his first visit to Dakar after leaving office in 2024. Fay believes that Sall's candidacy is in the interest of Senegal and the African continent.

Earlier in the year, Sall initiated his nomination for the UN's top job while Burundi held the chair of the African Union. The endorsement signifies a notable policy shift from Fay's administration, which had previously declined to support Sall.
