Saudi Aramco Halts Ras Tanura Refinery After Drone Strike

Saudi Aramco has temporarily halted operations at its 550,000 barrels per day Ras Tanura refinery, located in Saudi Arabia's eastern province, following a drone attack linked to Iran's retaliatory actions. This precautionary shutdown comes amid escalating tensions in the region, particularly after a coordinated strike by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets, which occurred last Saturday and resulted in explosions and smoke plumes in Tehran.

The Ras Tanura facility plays a critical role in Saudi crude exports, and the situation is reportedly under control at the time of the shutdown. The drone strike coincided with disruptions in shipping operations in the UAE and Oman.

Following these events, Brent crude futures rose by approximately 10%. The situation has raised concerns about the stability of global energy supplies, prompting countries like Japan and Greece to instruct their fleets to reconsider transit through sensitive areas.
