Supreme Court Nullifies PDP Convention, Leadership Crisis Emerges

The Supreme Court of Nigeria issued a split judgment on Thursday, nullifying the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) national convention held in Ibadan on November 15-16, which had produced a leadership led by Tanimu Turaki and supported by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. The court's decision was based on a breach of a subsisting court order that restrained the PDP from proceeding with the convention unless specific conditions were met.

The judgment was split 3-2, with the majority ruling that the PDP's actions were in contempt of a Federal High Court judgment. Turaki's camp stated that the PDP currently lacks defined leadership and expressed confidence that the party's constitutional organs would step in to resolve the situation and reconstitute its leadership.

The judgment also criticized the PDP for proceeding with the convention despite clear judicial directives requiring compliance with the court's orders.
