Supreme Court Reserves Judgment in PDP Leadership Dispute

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has reserved judgment in a leadership crisis involving the People's Democratic Party (PDP), specifically an appeal filed by a faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. This appeal challenges a March 9 decision by the Court of Appeal, which upheld a ruling that invalidated the party's convention held in Ibadan in November 2025.

The five-member panel, headed by Justice Lawal Garba, announced that the judgment date would be communicated later. The faction's counsel argued that the dispute is an internal party matter and not subject to judicial intervention, asserting that due process was followed during the convention.

However, the lower court ruled against the faction, nullifying their actions and restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognizing the outcomes. The Court of Appeal had earlier affirmed two judgments from the Federal High Court in Abuja, which halted the convention pending compliance with electoral laws, stating that the party failed to conduct valid state congresses, thereby invalidating the proposed convention.
