Supreme Court Bans 'Barrister' Title for Lawyers

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has issued a directive prohibiting lawyers from using the title "Barrister" as a prefix to their names in all official correspondence and engagements. This decision was communicated by Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun through an internal memorandum dated July 13, 2026, and signed by Chief Registrar Mr.

Kabir E. Akanbi.

The memorandum, titled "Prohibition of The Use of The Title Barrister as a Prefix to Names," states that the use of the title is inconsistent with the professionalism expected within the Supreme Court. The directive applies to all litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars, and lawyers, mandating immediate compliance in all official documents and communications.

Additionally, Heads of Departments and Unit Heads are instructed to ensure strict adherence to this directive among their staff, with supervisory officers tasked with enforcing compliance.
