SDP Chairman Gomb Defends Party Leadership Autonomy

Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Gomb, the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal does not determine party leadership.

He made this declaration during a press conference in Abuja, responding to attempts by INEC to resolve internal party leadership disputes. Gomb emphasized that the constitution grants political parties the sovereign right to govern their internal affairs, which should not be influenced by external regulatory bodies like INEC.

He pointed out that the SDP's National Executive Committee (NEC) is the principal executive organ responsible for managing the party's daily affairs. Gomb also addressed the recent expulsion of three senior party officials, including Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, asserting that the expulsions followed due process and were conducted by the party's disciplinary committee.

He expressed satisfaction with the new INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, and reiterated the importance of upholding the rule of law in party matters.
