U.S. Security Expert Calls for Continued Police Training in Nigeria

Security expert Mr. Kingslei Okafor appealed for the U.S. to extend its police training program in Nigeria during a Sunday interview.

He highlighted the growing need to deepen U.S.-Nigeria security cooperation, particularly after the arrival of 100 American military personnel at Bauchi airfield on February 16, 2026. This deployment followed U.S. airstrikes targeting terrorist groups linked to Sokoto State on December 25, 2025.

Mr. Okafor emphasized that expanding military advisory roles is crucial as public concern mounts regarding the planned conclusion of the U.S.

State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) police training program, scheduled to end on March 31, 2026. This three-year initiative trained 400 personnel in the Nigerian police force, including various specialized units.

He warned that an abrupt end to the program could undermine ongoing institutional reforms and counter-terrorism efforts, which require close coordination between military and police forces.
