Senate Confirms Professor Fasina as Ambassador Amid Controversy

On Wednesday, the Nigerian Senate confirmed Professor Abayomi Sundai Fasina, former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), as a non-career ambassador despite significant opposition regarding sexual harassment allegations against him. The confirmation followed a report presented by Senator Simon Lalong, the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which stated that Fasina's credentials were thoroughly scrutinized and cleared by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Senator Adam Oshiomhole opposed the confirmation, arguing that allowing the nomination to proceed amidst allegations would be insensitive to women. Senator Cyril Fasuyi also expressed concerns regarding the allegations.

However, Senator Lalong defended the nomination, stating that no court documents were pending against Fasina and that the Senate should not act on unproven allegations. Senate President Godswill Akpabio ruled that the committee had fulfilled its constitutional responsibilities, leading to a voice vote that confirmed Fasina's appointment.
