Senate Did Not Reject Electronic Transmission of Election Results, Clarifies Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio, a Senator, clarified that the Senate did not reject the electronic transmission of election results, contrary to claims. The issue stemmed from misunderstandings during the amendment process of the Electoral Act.

Akpabio explained that adjustments were made to prevent legal complications, emphasizing that real-time transmission could pose challenges during network failures. Former Senate President David Mark disclosed that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) supports electronic transmission of election results.

The Senate passed the Electoral Act 2022, repealing and reenacting it, but failed to include mandatory provisions for electronic transmission. The debate continues on preserving INEC's discretion while keeping electronic transmission within legal boundaries.
