Nigerian Senate Maintains Electronic Transmission Provision in Electoral Act, Sen. Kingibe Clarifies

Sen. Kingibe, a member of the Labour Party (LP), clarified that the Nigerian Senate did not reverse the electronic transmission provision in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

She stated that during the legislative process, the Senate maintained the original provision after considering input from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and civil society organizations. The Senate noted recommendations for electronic transmission but ultimately retained the clause.

Additionally, the Senate rejected proposals for real-time transmission of results and opted to maintain current sanctions in the Electoral Act, including fines and jail terms for electoral offenders. Sen.

Kingibe emphasized that reports suggesting a reversal of the electronic transmission clause were a misunderstanding of the proceedings in the Senate.
