Senate Appoints Toni Nwoye as New Minority Whip

On Wednesday, the Nigerian Senate appointed Toni Nwoye as the new minority whip, a decision made unanimously by the Senate minority caucus. This appointment comes in the wake of a fresh wave of defections, with two senators, including former minority whip Osita Ngwu, crossing over to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ngwu's defection was motivated by a desire to align with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu, who described the APC as a stable political platform in the country. Nwoye, who was elected to the Senate in 2023 on the Labour Party platform, previously defected from the African Democratic Congress in late 2025.

His new leadership role occurs amid a broader trend of defections that are steadily eroding the strength of the opposition parties in the Senate, which was inaugurated as the 10th National Assembly.
