Senate Approves 2026 Electoral Act Amendment Bill

The Nigerian Senate passed the 2026 Electoral Act Amendment Bill on a Thursday, led by Senator Simon Lalong of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Plateau State. The bill aims to address gaps in the timeline for court jurisdiction over pre-election matters, following a report from the committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Lalong emphasized the need to resolve persistent procedural constitutional challenges in Nigeria's electoral jurisprudence, which have led to uncertainties and inconsistencies in determining pre-election matters. The proposed amendments include changes to Section 29 of the Electoral Act and the introduction of a new Section 29A, establishing a clear jurisdiction framework for pre-election matters.

This framework designates the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal as the original courts for specific electoral disputes, ensuring expedited resolutions and reducing the potential for conflicting judgments. The bill seeks to enhance judicial efficiency, reduce delays, and reinforce public confidence in the electoral process.
